Traditional Chinese Medicine and Herpes Zoster (Shingles)
Skin & Beauty · ICD-10 B02
Shingles (带状疱疹) results from reactivation of the chickenpox virus, producing a band of blistering rash and pain. Shingles needs prompt medical care; see a physician early for antiviral treatment. TCM is only supportive care here. This information is educational and is not advertising or an individual diagnosis.
The TCM perspective
TCM views shingles through Liver-Gallbladder Damp-Heat, Spleen Damp-Heat, and Qi-Blood Stagnation, the last of which may relate to pain lingering after the rash heals. Care approaches such as acupuncture aim to help ease discomfort as a complement, and do not replace antiviral medication and physician care. Anyone who suspects shingles should see a doctor as soon as possible and should not wait or delay treatment.
TCM patterns
- Liver-Gallbladder Damp-Heat — Red rash, blisters, and burning pain, associated with accumulated damp-heat.
- Spleen Damp-Heat — Clear blisters and puffy, moist skin, associated with internal dampness.
- Qi-Blood Stagnation — Pain persisting after the rash heals, associated with obstructed circulation.
General self-care
- See a doctor promptly for antiviral treatment, especially in the early rash stage.
- Keep the rash area gently clean and avoid scratching.
- Rest adequately to support recovery.
- Avoid close contact with people who have never had chickenpox or who have weakened immunity.
When to consult a doctor
- See a physician right away when shingles is suspected, to start antiviral care urgently; do not delay treatment.
- If the rash appears on the face, around or near the eye, seek urgent medical care due to eye risk.
- If pain is severe or persists after the rash heals, consult a doctor for symptom management.
