Traditional Chinese Medicine and Herpes Simplex

Skin & Beauty · ICD-10 B00

Herpes simplex (单纯疱疹) is caused by the herpes simplex virus, producing small recurring blisters, often on the lips or genitals. TCM is only supportive care here; antiviral medication from a physician remains necessary. This information is educational and is not advertising or an individual diagnosis.

The TCM perspective

TCM views herpes through Damp-Heat, Liver-Gallbladder Fire, and, in frequent recurrences, Yin Deficiency with Empty Heat. Care approaches aim to help ease discomfort and support the body's balance as a complement, and do not replace physician care and antiviral medication. Results may vary from person to person.

TCM patterns

  • Damp-Heat — Inflamed, burning blisters, associated with accumulated internal damp-heat.
  • Liver-Gallbladder Fire — Flares associated with stress and heated emotions.
  • Yin Deficiency with Empty Heat — Seen with frequent recurrences, associated with fatigue and lowered immunity.

General self-care

  • Rest adequately and manage stress, which can trigger flares.
  • Keep the affected area gently clean and avoid picking or scratching.
  • Avoid contact or sharing items during an outbreak to reduce transmission.
  • Support overall health and nutrition to help immunity.

When to consult a doctor

  • Consult a physician for antiviral treatment, especially at a first outbreak or with frequent recurrences.
  • If blisters appear near the eye or symptoms are severe, see a doctor promptly.
  • People with weakened immunity or who are pregnant should consult a doctor to plan care.
