Traditional Chinese Medicine and PCOS

Women's Health · ICD-10 E28.2

PCOS (多囊卵巢综合征, ICD-10 E28.2) is a hormonal condition often involving irregular periods, acne, and insulin resistance. TCM is used as a complement alongside your gynecologist and endocrinologist — not as a replacement.

The TCM perspective

TCM views PCOS through accumulated Damp-Phlegm, together with Liver Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis, or Kidney deficiency. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs aim to care for the body's balance and may support cycle regularity alongside lifestyle changes. Results vary from person to person.

TCM patterns

  • Damp-Phlegm — Often easy weight gain, a heavy feeling in the body, and infrequent periods.
  • Liver Qi Stagnation + Blood Stasis — Often stress, mood swings, and irregular menstruation.
  • Kidney Deficiency — Often fatigue, scanty or absent periods, and aversion to cold.

General self-care

  • Move your body regularly, which helps care for blood sugar and weight balance.
  • Choose lower-glycemic foods; reduce sugar and refined carbohydrates.
  • Get enough rest and manage stress.
  • Track your cycle as useful information for your doctor.
  • Maintain a healthy weight together with your physician's guidance.

When to consult a doctor

  • See a gynecologist or endocrinologist to diagnose and manage PCOS — TCM is a complementary approach only.
  • If planning pregnancy, consult a fertility specialist.
  • If periods are absent for a long time or other abnormal symptoms occur, see a doctor for further evaluation.
