Traditional Chinese Medicine and Fibromyalgia
Pain & Musculoskeletal · ICD-10 M79.7
Fibromyalgia (纤维肌痛, ICD-10 M79.7) is a condition of chronic widespread pain in the muscles and soft tissues, together with fatigue, poor sleep, heightened sensitivity to touch, and brain fog. It is a complex condition that affects quality of life. This information is for general understanding and is not a personalized diagnosis.
The TCM perspective
Traditional Chinese Medicine views widespread chronic pain as involving several system imbalances at once, especially Liver Qi Stagnation combined with Blood Deficiency, which leaves the muscles and sinews poorly nourished, along with Spleen Qi Deficiency that produces fatigue and Heart-Kidney Disharmony that affects sleep and mood. TCM care focuses on rebalancing both body and mind to help ease the overall picture.
TCM patterns
- Liver Qi Stagnation + Blood Deficiency — Widespread pain that shifts with mood and stress, along with poorly nourished muscles and fatigue.
- Spleen Qi Deficiency — Chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, a weak digestive system, and a sense of heaviness.
- Heart-Kidney Disharmony — Insomnia, restlessness, brain fog, and mood fluctuations.
General self-care
- Keep a regular rest and sleep schedule to support the body's recovery.
- Do gentle, gradual exercise such as walking, tai chi, or light yoga.
- Manage stress with deep breathing, meditation, or relaxing activities.
- Eat a balanced, nourishing diet and keep the body warm.
When to consult a doctor
- Pain or fatigue severe enough to interfere with work and daily life.
- New, unusual symptoms such as swollen red joints, clear muscle weakness, or unexplained weight loss.
- Depression, anxiety, or thoughts of self-harm — consult a doctor or mental health professional.
- A need for a clear diagnosis, since widespread pain can have other causes that must be ruled out.
