Traditional Chinese Medicine and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Men's Health · ICD-10 N40
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a common condition in middle-aged and older men, often affecting urination — for example, frequent nighttime urination or a feeling of incomplete emptying. This page offers educational information from a TCM perspective only. The TCM approach is complementary and should remain under the care of a urologist.
The TCM perspective
TCM views urinary symptoms in older men in relation to Kidney energy that naturally declines with age, accumulation of Damp-Heat in the Lower Jiao, and impaired circulation. The TCM approach focuses on supporting overall balance and easing day-to-day discomfort. It is a complementary form of care that works alongside a physician's diagnosis and treatment, not a replacement for it.
TCM patterns
- Kidney Deficiency (Yang or Yin) — Associated with age-related decline, lower energy, and frequent nighttime urination.
- Damp-Heat in the Lower Jiao — Linked to a sensation of difficult, burning, or incomplete urination.
- Blood Stasis — Often seen in longstanding cases, with a feeling of tightness or discomfort in the lower abdomen.
General self-care
- Drink enough fluids during the day and reduce intake before bed to limit nighttime waking.
- Reduce caffeine and alcohol, which can stimulate urination.
- Move regularly and avoid sitting for long, continuous periods.
- Keep the lower body warm and get adequate rest.
When to consult a doctor
- Consult a urologist for evaluation and to rule out serious causes such as infection or prostate abnormalities.
- See a doctor promptly if you notice blood in the urine, inability to urinate, or fever with pain.
- The TCM approach is complementary and should remain under the supervision of your primary treating physician.
