What to expect
Your First Visit to a TCM Clinic — What Happens & How to Prepare
A first visit at Joy Luck Clinic is unhurried and takes about 50–60 minutes. Here is exactly what happens, and how to prepare so you get the most from it.
How long it takes
Set aside about 50–60 minutes for a first visit. Most of that time is conversation and assessment; follow-up visits are usually shorter. Nothing is rushed — the first appointment is where your practitioner gets to know you.
What happens, step by step
1. Health history. Your practitioner asks about your main concern, plus sleep, digestion, energy, stress and daily routine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the whole picture matters, not one symptom in isolation.
2. TCM assessment. This usually includes reading the pulse at both wrists and observing the tongue — two long-standing methods used to understand the body's overall balance.
3. Explanation and discussion. Your practitioner explains what they observed and talks through a suitable approach with you before anything begins.
4. Treatment, if appropriate and agreed. Depending on your situation, acupuncture, cupping or moxibustion may be carried out the same visit, using single-use, sterile equipment.
5. Guidance. You leave with practical self-care suggestions and, if useful, a plan for follow-up.
How to prepare
Eat a light meal one to two hours before — it is better not to arrive on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing so the elbows, knees and lower legs are easy to reach.
Bring a list of any medicines and supplements you take, and any recent diagnoses or lab results.
Avoid vigorous exercise and alcohol just beforehand, and jot down the questions you want to ask.
What it costs
Prices are transparent and the same as those posted in the clinic — pulse and tongue reading is ฿1,000, individual treatments such as acupuncture, cupping or moxibustion are ฿800, and combined sessions start from ฿1,390. All prices are net and include VAT. You can see the full menu on our services and pricing page.
