What to expect

Aftercare for Acupuncture & Cupping — and What Cupping Marks Mean

What is normal after acupuncture and cupping, simple aftercare, and what those round cupping marks actually are.

How you may feel afterwards

After a session many people feel relaxed and a little tired. A mild soreness, or occasionally a tiny bruise where a needle was placed, can happen and usually settles quickly. It is a good idea to drink some water, take it easy for the rest of the day, and avoid heavy exercise and alcohol.

About cupping marks

The round marks left by cupping are not bruises from an injury and are usually painless. Gentle suction draws circulation towards the surface of the skin, which can leave a circular mark for a few days.

The marks typically fade on their own over about 3–7 days, though this varies from person to person. They are a normal, expected part of cupping.

Simple aftercare

Do: keep the treated area warm, stay hydrated, and rest.

For the rest of the day, avoid: very hot showers, sauna and swimming; vigorous exercise; alcohol; and cold wind or air-conditioning blowing directly on the area.
